Ages Unite Through the Power of Music

If you’re looking for a bit of entertainment or you’re keen to be part of the entertainment, why not head along to the Phoenix Country Music Club Inc. monthly social meetings.

From singing or playing a musical instrument to poetry or even dancing, it doesn’t matter whether you’re young or still young at heart, everyone is encouraged to be a part of the fun. There’s even a backing band (Boots n All) for those walk ups brave enough to hit the stage but need a bit of music behind them or the opportunity is there for those happy enough to fly solo. Now, guest artists will also feature at the club’s events, with Craig Giles gracing the stage in August.

If you haven’t heard of Phoenix Country Music Club Inc. before, they have been in operation now for a little over a year. Every month (on the second Sunday) they hold a social meeting at the Burpengary Community Hall for members and the public to come along and either take part or sit back, relax and enjoy a few tunes.

“We just try and encourage anyone to get up and sing. It doesn't matter if it's Baa Baa Black Sheep or another easy song they know how to do. We accept everybody and love seeing people get up and have a go.

“We encourage young and old alike to get up and ‘have a go’,” secretary Gloria Knight says.

“On average ,we have about 75-80 every social and we are thrilled to have such a varied range of entertainers come along and participate.”

Gloria is a singer and speaks very highly of president Noreen Bennedick and her compere skills.

“Noreen has a great way of relating to the crowd,” Gloria says. “She has an amazing sense of humour and her poetry is the best to listen to.”

In a bid to grow on what they have already built in a short time the club wants to encourage more members of the community to join them every month.

“We’re very much about crowd participation and getting as many people through the doors as we can,” Noreen says. “Obviously we’re an older demographic but we welcome all ages and we just get together once a month for our socials to have an outing and socialise with others.

For those wondering if the music is old country, think again.

“It’s not old school country music. I do old stuff because I am old,” Noreen says with a laugh. “We have a couple of younger performers that do more modern music, but they do songs that everybody can sort of relate to and sing and we have an excellent band with Boots n All, they are a great bunch of talented musicians led by Ken Myers who is called Boots.”

Now, they have the opportunity to welcome special guest artists into the mix. In August, Craig Giles (pictured) will perform.

“It's exciting for us to have such a well-known and loved artist do our very first guest spot,” Gloria says. “You might need to be in at 10am to get a seat for this one, it will be too good to miss. There will be food on the menu, as well as the usual free tea and coffee, with water and drinks available too.”

Socials are held in the air conditioned Burpengary Community Hall, Station Road, Burpengary on the second Sunday of every month from 11am. Coming up next is Christmas in July (July 9).
