Moreton Bay Region is making a splash with local events at Deception Bay and Lawnton to celebrate Disability Action Week.
Spokesperson for Lifestyle and Amenity, Councillor Denise Sims said council was thrilled to support two local groups with a $1000 grant to hold events in their community in celebration of Disability Action Week between September 9 and 15.
“Queensland’s Disability Action Week is about empowering and recognising the important contribution people with a disability in our community make,” Cr Sims said.
“One in five Queenslanders have a disability and many more have someone close to them touched by disability, so the week is an important celebration and it also raises awareness about how we can make our local communities more accessible for all-abilities.
“To celebrate Disability Action Week, QDN Deception Bay Disability Support Group will hold an expo at Deception Bay to showcase the support services available in the local community for people with a disability; and Sensory Souls will hold a Sensory Pool Day in Lawnton to give families the opportunity to take their children along to an inclusive pool environment.
"Both events reinforce council’s vision to improve the accessibility and inclusiveness of council infrastructure and services in the region.
“Earlier this year, council adopted the region’s first Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2018-2022 following community consultation.
“The plan articulates a clear strategy starting this year through to 2022 to make our region more accessible and inclusive for people living with disabilities and to improve access and inclusion in our community.
Cr Sims said council supported local events across the region during Disability Action Week through its Disability Action Week Fund.
Applications for the Disability Action Week Fund opens March 1 and close May 1 each year. For more information on the grant visit: https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/grants/disability-action-week/
