Moreton Bay Regional Council has announced it will install new LED warning signs, monitoring stations and flood gauges to bolster community safety in times of severe storms.
Local Disaster Management Group Chair Councillor Peter Flannery announced council would enhance its existing flood warning system with new technology to notify nearby motorists of flooded roads and improve flood data collection.
“Council will install LED warning signage across 10 roads in Moreton Bay, which have been frequently impacted by storms in recent years. This fit-for-purpose system will provide immediate warning to motorists in the event roads are flooded,” Cr Flannery said.

“Living in the most disaster-prone state in the country, our region has felt the impact of severe weather events in recent years, and this program is an important key in helping to improve our disaster resilience.
Council will also fit out two water level monitoring stations at Wamuran and Eatons Hill as well as eight maximum height gauges throughout the region to help collate detailed information on local rivers and improve flood modelling.
“This technology will give us the capability to gather detailed information on flooded roads to help plan for future upgrades and flood mitigation works.”
The announcement comes after council successfully secured $260,000 in project funding through the 2017-18 Natural Disaster Resilience Program jointly funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments.
State Member for Morayfield and Minister for Police Mark Ryan said the new systems would support the efforts of local police and emergency services during severe weather.
“Making sure people have that vital information about flooded rivers and roads means they can plan their travel accordingly, and ensure our police and emergency services don’t have to risk their lives rescuing motorists who have driven into floodwater,” he said.
Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton welcomed the announcement and funding through the Natural Disaster Resilience Program.
“We all have a role to play in times of severe weather to make sure our families can get home safe. This project will go a long way to safeguarding our community when the time comes,” he said.
