Commonly known as ‘Yellowbelly’ due to the obvious colouration underneath, Golden Perch are widespread naturally through most of the eastern half of Australia, and are also stocked in most dams around Brisbane.
A prized angling species, Golden Perch have very oily and fatty flesh making them great to eat. Taking a variety of lures and baits such as worms, live shrimp and yabbies, they are quite easy to catch, although in my experience they don’t put up much of a fight until close to the boat or shore. Growing to over 70cm, most fish I’ve seen are around 30-50cm.
A Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) permit is required to fish most lakes in South East Queensland, which are easily available online or most good fishing tackle shops. A possession limit of 10 Golden Perch is in place, but please only take what you need.
