Moreton Bay Regional Council is urging residents to think green and help combat food waste by setting up their own compost bin as part of International Composting Awareness Week (ICAW May 7 - 13).
Council's spokesperson for Waste Services, Councillor Adam Hain said residents could turn their homes into a greener and more sustainable environment by applying some simple techniques.
“About 7.6million tonnes of food is wasted in Australia every year. To put this into perspective, the amount of food waste produced is enough to fill 35 cruise ships, which is unreal,” Cr Hain said.
“I encourage residents to attend our free composting and worm farming workshops around the Moreton Bay Region, on Saturday 12 May, so they can start composting at home.
“Get your kids involved and teach them about the importance of caring for the environment. I built my very own compost bin and my garden is thriving because of it.
“You can also choose reusable options in your own backyard such as lawn clippings and food scraps.
“You will be surprised at what you can achieve by taking these small steps. The soil quality and garden vitality improves when these nutrients are released into the soil, you prevent greenhouse gas emissions and reduce waste to landfill.
“Why not grow fruit, vegetables and herbs in your garden, which will further enhance your household sustainability.
“Another bonus is that you don’t have to water as much because the compost helps the soil to retain moisture; another plus you recycle nutrients and reduce the use of artificial fertilisers. It’s a win for your health and the environment.
“Many schools in our region have been inspired to adopt sustainable practices, such as recycling collection programs or processing their organic waste onsite using compost or worm farms.
“By taking small steps to reduce greenhouse gases, you set yourself up for big results for now and into the future.
Free composting workshops will be held at Kumbartcho Environmental Centre, 15 Bunya Pine Crt, Eatons Hill, Redcliffe Botanical Gardens, George Street entrance, Redcliffe, CREEC Environmental Centre, 150 Rowley Rd, Burpengary on May 12.
